The project is to modernise Old Street Roundabout and Tube Station in the heart of London, helping to provide a contemporary public space and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the junction, with segregated cycle lanes and signal-controlled pedestrian crossings. Work to the station’s entrances and traffic islands is currently underway, including the excavation of existing footpaths and the construction of new pedestrian entrances.
Given the future volume of public traffic specifiers needed a concrete material that would perform well in the project’s high traffic, weight sensitive areas. In response, Capital Concrete supplied a lightweight concrete mix – with specialist aggregates provided by Euro-Agg, achieving results that more traditional concrete mixes alone would not deliver. Lightweight Concrete includes increased thermal properties as well as reduced structural loading and greater fire resistance, making it a popular choice for specifiers.
Luke Smith, Managing Director of Capital Concrete, said: “Having had experience in the redevelopment of Battersea using lightweight concrete, we were delighted to be invited to work on this project. The Old Street roundabout development is one of many important projects relying on lightweight concrete’s special attributes, and its usage in the some of the capital’s most prominent construction projects is increasing.”
