Screed Success For Iconic London Landmark

The redevelopment of the iconic Battersea Power Station has involved extensive use of Cemfloor cementitious liquid flooring screed supplied by Capital Concrete.

The £9 billion regeneration project will see the creation of a vibrant new destination in central London, with a community of homes and businesses plus leisure and cultural venues.

Cemfloor is a high-performance, free-flowing, self-compacting liquid screed which can be used in domestic and commercial applications. Compared to traditional screed it has the additional benefits of having a reduced carbon footprint because it uses less cement. It is also more cost effective for the customer as it doesn’t need as many people to install it and its fast-drying properties mean that floor coverings such as tiles and vinyl can be applied sooner than some traditional screeds.

To achieve the required heat and sound performance for certain areas of the huge complex, flooring contractor B&K Systems designed a lightweight build-up using Energystore TLA insulation layer (to level out the existing un-even substrate) topped with 30mm depth of Cemfloor bonded directly onto the insulation layer. Both products could be installed as a bonded system, helping to minimise weight.

This type of screed topping means the slab can take light foot traffic 24 to 48 hours with access towers and scaffolding able to be applied within seven days, and full loading by 21 days.

Padraic McGrath, R & D Technical Manager for Cemfloor said: “The whole system was delivered ahead of schedule and a significant time saving was achieved compared with the original specified floor build-up. The slab will be covered with various types of flooring all of which are compatible with the screed topping.”

Jack Sindhu, Technical Manager for Capital Concrete commented “working with the team at Cemfloor and B&K systems to develop a suitable mix for this application shows what can be achieved with this excellent product – a great collaboration between the three teams to combine expertise and knowledge to deliver a quality result."
